Certified Automated Gate
Operator Installer

The Certified Automated Gate Operator Installer (CAGOI), administered by the Institute of Door Education and Accreditation (IDEA), offers eligible candidates the ability to distinguish themselves from competitors and promote this certification to the public.

Created by a coalition of industry leaders from the American Fence Association, the International Door Association, the Door and Access Systems Manufacturers Association, the National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association, the Automated Gate Operator Installer Certification program aims to validate the credentials of individuals who have the experience and skills in the installation and servicing of automated gate systems.

Eligibility & Cost

The CAGOI is open to automated gate operator installers who have a minimum of two years’ experience installing and servicing automated gate operator systems. There is a $250 fee which includes a study guide for the examination, testing, and three years of certification.

Preparing For The CAGOI Exam

The CAGOI exam is a self-study course. Once a candidate registers to take the exam, a study guide will be provided to him or her.

To aid in preparing for the exam, a candidate can elect to register for the Operator Installer School (OIS), a five-day instructor led course offered by the American Fence Association (AFA). Learn more about the OIS School.

Registering For The CAGOI Exam

Candidates can register through an approved AFA Event (AFA University or FENCETECH) or attend an exam session scheduled through IDEA. All potential candidates must complete the CAGOI application and submit it to IDEA in order to be eligible to sit for an exam.

The Automated Gate Operator Installer Certification is valid for three years based on the effective date assigned by IDEA. Each certified installer must earn 9 hours of continuing education (CE) credits during the three-year period. IDEA provides a CEU submission form on their website if a certificate or other documentation is not provided.
