Residential gate operators range from lightweight parking system tilt-arm gates for apartments and condomi-niums to single swing, double swing and slide gates for the same type of complexes, residential communities, private residences and personal estates. The proper integration of the fence system, gate and gate operator needs to be well planned according to Frank D. Hinds, CFP. |

“There are a variety of operators available for swing gates and slide gates using hydraulic arms, linear actuators or screw drive operators, and all of them can open and close a gate,” Hinds said. “But when considering or specifying an operator, make sure it is suitable for the gate - some gates are light, some are heavy, so motor strength and drive mechanism must be considered.”
Swing gates, which are designed to open and close by swinging in or out, are operated by mechanical and hydraulic arms and chain drives. Slide gates, which either slide on wheels or in tracks, are generally opened and closed with a chain and gear operator.
Cantilever gates are supported on one end and are usually counter balanced for ease of handling, according to Corrigan, CFP. |
