Vehicle Crash Gates & Gate Operators

High security perimeters require heavy-duty gates and gate operators to control vehicular access while pedestrian traffic should have a separate point of entry and be controlled by turnstiles or pedestrian swing gate systems, according to industry experts.

Security gate systems are manufactured in several configurations to meet the specific project requirements. When selecting the proper gate panel, design consideration must be given to the gate opening width and height, and to special facility requirements such as signs or lights placed on the gates. It seems today's facility managers and owners are searching for the best security solution that combines security, initial cost advantages and long term operational cost savings.

Specific vehicle crash rated gate systems (chain-link or ornamental) are determined by the owners' perceived security risk - what they expect the security threat to be. The anticipated vehicle size, the approach to the gate, estimated vehicle speed and the acceptable level of penetration into the secured area establish the performance parameters for the security gate system. For most high security vehicle gate applications, the cantilever sliding gate is the first choice and, if space limitations exist, then vertical lift gates are recommended. Double drive swing gates are generally not used in high security environments.

Whether cantilever or vertical lift, vehicle crash rated gates feature a fortifying member that consists of a structural steel tube housing one or more cables, pre-cast concrete anchors and spring-loaded locking mechanisms that work in unison to restrain and limit penetration to a predetermined acceptable level.

When the gate is hit, the fortifying member (structural tube) is pushed into the pre-cast concrete anchors and spring loaded rods engage and lock the structural tube and cables in place instantaneously. The gate collapses against the anchors, the tube bends, the cables then catch the vehicle and absorb the energy.

Gate Operators

Gate operators are used with heavy-duty cantilever and lift gates requiring heavy-duty motors. Some of the large cantilever gates stretch over 30' in length or longer and can weigh almost 1,500 lbs. or more.

Gate operators integrate with a variety of access control systems and can operate high security cantilever or lift gates. High security gates are equipped with powerful (high speed) motors with chain or worm gear driven mechanisms.

Generally, security gate operators include battery backup systems for continuous
